The Fanfarlophone is an instrument I designed and built some years ago and recently rebuilt in it's current form.
It generates a magnetic square wave current which when held near the pickups of a guitar is then heard through the guitar itself.
The signal generator is worn on the wrist and powered by batteries. The pitch of the signal may be changed via the tuner dial and switched on and off via a switch for the index finger.
![]() The instrument may be tuned via a second smaller dial, so that the larger dial produced an 'E' when turned fully in one direction. Numbers on the larger dial allow you to see the notes you are currently playing. By moving the magnetic induction unit (attached to the finger) around the guitar pickups, the volume and tone may be varied. This is different to the e-bow, as the note is created by the unit itself rather than the guitar strings. ![]() The unnamed instrument was finally named the 'Fanfarlophone' in 2007 when I started using it in the band Fanfarlo, in the song 'Pilot'. I left Fanfarlo in 2009 after we recorded our album 'Reservoir' - I guess I should rename the Fanfarlophone if I start to use it in my new band The Lost Cavalry, but so far the name has kinda stuck. Above is the construction diagram and circuit diagram for the Fanfarlophone, please make your own version! ![]() |
